Design for Six Sigma | DFSS
Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) is the application of Six Sigma (SS)principles to the design of products, business process or service.
While SS is usually used for solving existing manufacturing or service process problems and removal of the defects and variation associated with defects, DFSS strives to generate a new process where none existed, or where an existing process is deemed to be inadequate and in need of replacement.
In another words, traditional SS seeks for continuous improvement after a process already exists, DFSS aims to create a process with the end in mind of optimally building the efficiencies of Six Sigma methodology into the process before implementation.
DFSS seeks to avoid manufacturing/service process problems by using advanced Voice of the Customer techniques and proper systems engineering techniques to avoid process problems from the beginning.
DFSS uses the IDOV (Identify, Design, Optimize & Validate) model:
I = Identify : Identify the customer and specifications (CTQs).
D = Design : Design translates the customer CTQs into functional requirements and into solution alternatives. A selection process whittles down the list of solutions to the “best” solution.
O = Optimize : Optimize uses advanced statistical tools and modeling to predict and optimize the design and performance.
V = Validate : Validate makes sure that the design you’ve developed will meet the customer CTQs.
